PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a developer remaining amount detecting method that improve remaining amount detection precision of a developer in a developing device. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a control means to which a signal is input from a developer amount detecting member. The control means has a first step of calculating a reference value on which calculation of the remaining amount of the developer stored in a developer storage section from the signal is based, a second step of calculating the remaining amount of the developer stored in the developer storage section according to a quantity of variation of the signal from the reference value, a third step of calculating a variation width of the signal corresponding to a rotational period of an agitating member, and a fourth step of varying the reference value calculated in the first step to a new reference value derived from the variation width when the variation width of the signal reaches a predetermined value, and detects the remaining amount of the developer.
