PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device in which optical disks disabled due to format error are decreased. SOLUTION: In the optical disk device in which -VR format or video format of re-writable optical disks are performed, when -VR format of the re-writable optical disk fails and when a defective sector during -VR format is not used in video format, message whether video format is performed or not is outputted, when instruction for performing video format is given, video format is performed.
