Extra sections 4c may be added to the upper portion 4b of a telescopic mast of a tower crane by removing a portion 22 of the lower section 4a, sliding the section 4c into place along a platform 20, 21, and lowering the upper portion 4b on ot the section 4c. A cable 14 raises the jib to a horizontal position as the tower is extended. This cable is lengthened by the height of a section each time an extra one is added.
