In a hinge construction suitable for a motor vehicle tailgate, boot-lid or bonnet, an arm 8 supporting the tailgate is fixed to a shaft 7 pivotally mounted in mounting bracket 1 and carrying a lever 9. The lever 9 is pivotally connected to a spring loaded linkage 16, 14 which counterbalances the weight of the tailgate. The spring loading is effected by a pair of tension springs 19 disposed one on each side of the linkage 16, 14 and contained within the mounting bracket 1. The geometry is such that a small force acts on the tailgate in the closed position so that it is freed on release of a latch and such that the tailgate is held by the springs in the fully open position. |
