The tip 3 of a screw extruder is cooled independently of the helix proper 2 to cause a build-up of pressure in the material being advanced by the screw. Air and/or water are used as coolant, being supplied to the tip through an inner tube 4 and discharged through a concentric tube 5. An air space 9 insulates the helix proper from the coolant, though means for cooling the helix proper may be provided. |
