A crank-shaft is hardened by nitriding it (e.g. at 950 DEG - 1050 DEG F. in anhydrous ammonia) and the journals thereof are then quickly heated (e.g. induction heating) to a temperature in the austenitizing range for the steel and then quenched to form nitrogen bearing martensite therein. |
