An apparatus for reproducing an optical disc and a method for controlling the same are provided to minimize the degradation of the quality of the final image when video contents are reproduced. An apparatus for reproducing an optical disc includes an optical disc drive(104), a video format transformer(108), and a controller(112). The optical disc driver(104) reads out data of video contents recorded in an optical disc. The video format transformer(108) transforms a video format of the video contents. The controller(112) determines whether a display which outputs the video contents supports the video format of the video contents. The controller(112) transforms the video format of the video contents into a format most approximate to the video format of the video contents if the display does not support the video format of the video contents, in which the format is selected from among video formats supported by the display.
