A composition comprising an extract of Cimicifuga heracleifolia Komarov or visnagin is provided to show the protecting effect on damage of a brain cell, thereby being usefully used as a brain cell protecting agent for preventing or treating brain diseases caused by death of brain neuronal cell such as stroke. A composition for preventing or treating diseases in central nervous system comprises an extract of Cimicifuga heracleifolia Komarov which is selected from the group consisting of Cimicifuga davurica, Cimicifuga foetida and Cimicifuga simplex, and extracted by using an alcohol, and includes visnagin represented by the formula(1) as an active ingredient.
