PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission AT with a brake element B2 to be fastened to each of two shift stages, having improved shifting quality by enlarging the control range of controlled hydraulic pressure during fastening to a high-speed stage. SOLUTION: On a brake piston 85 which thrusts the brake element B2 to be fastened to each of the first and second shift stages, an opposite chamber 89 is arranged on the opposite side to a brake pressure receiving chamber 88. When the brake element B2 is fastened to the first shift stage, hydraulic pressure is supplied to the brake pressure receiving chamber 88, and when the brake element B2 is fastened to the second shift stage, hydraulic pressure is supplied to each of the brake pressure receiving chamber 88 and the opposite chamber 89.
