PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas heat pump type air conditioner and its starting method, capable of protecting a compressor by preventing liquid refrigerant from being sucked to the compressor. SOLUTION: This gas heat pump type air conditioner wherein a refrigerant circuit 7 is constituted by connecting the compressor 17 driven by a gas engine 53 with refrigerating pipe conduits of an indoor heat exchanger and an outdoor heat exchanger through a four-way valve, a bypass flow channel is formed in a state of being branched from the refrigerant circuit 7, and joining together with the refrigerant at an upstream side of the compressor 17, and a water heat exchanger 31 is disposed in the bypass flow channel to collect exhaust heat from the gas engine 53 for heating the refrigerant, comprises a control portion 37 for monitoring a superheating degree of the refrigerant discharged from the compressor 17, and increasing the amount of refrigerant flowing in the water heat exchanger 31 when the superheating degree is low.
