PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economic method for producing an alkylarylsulfonic acid salt type activator having more multiple uses than those of conventional methods. SOLUTION: This method for preparing a branched alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon comprises bringing a branched olefin containing ≤0.5% aliphatic quaternary hydrocarbon obtained by dehydrogenating an isoparaffin composition obtained by the hydrogenolysis and hydro-isomerization of a paraffin wax containing ≤0.5% aliphatic quaternary hydrocarbon by a suitable catalyst, in contact with an aromatic hydrocarbon; a method for preparing a branched alkyl arylsulfonic acid salt comprises the sulfonation of the branched alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon prepared by the above method for preparing the branched alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon; and the branched alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon composition and (branched alkyl) arylsulfonic acid salt composition obtained by the method so defined are provided.
