The system includes a receiver and a time switch placed on the item to be monitored. A transmitter, e.g radio frequency transmitter, is provided remotely of the item. The transmitter is adapted to send a reset signal to the time switch when the item is in the proximity of the transmitter. The time switch is automatically actuable on failure to receive reset signal within a set time and adapted, on actuation, to render the item at least partially useless. The time switch may be incorporated in the electrical system of the item such as the electrical engine management system of a vehicle. The transmitter can be installed in a location in which the item is regularly housed, located or stored. The transmitter may be a source of signal via a GSM network, pager network, remote transponder system or swipe card, smart card or the like. |
