PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a crystalline hafnia sol comprised of monodispersed particles, applicable to refractory materials, insulators, dielectrics, coatings, optical materials, abrasive compounds, catalysts, solid solution, sintered compacts, and other various ceramics. SOLUTION: The crystalline hafnia sol containing particles of an average particle diameter of 30-100 nm is produced by a method comprising retaining a slurry comprising hafnium hydroxide, an acid and water at a temperature of at least 80°C and, preferably, containing 0.01-2.0 g-equivalent amount of the acid, in a slurry, relative to 1 mole of hafnium.
