A digital broadcasting receiver and a processing method thereof are provided to be strong against errors and compatible with an existing VSB(Vestigial side band) receiver when transmitting supplementary data through a channel, and receive the supplementary data without errors even in a channel having serious ghost and noise in comparison with the existing VSB(Vestigial side band) receiver . A digital broadcasting processing method comprises the following steps of: overlapping input data with a preset overlap ratio and converting the overlapped input data into a frequency domain; differently presuming a channel impulse response per each region according to layer region information, performing conversion into the frequency domain and operating an equalization coefficient if plural enhanced data packets inserted with known data are divided into N layered areas and transmitted; compensating channel distortion after multiplying the equalization coefficient by the overlap data converted into the frequency domain, converting the compensation result into a time domain, extracting effective data from overlap data of the time domain and outputting the extracted effective data.
