Tobacco particles are fed by rollers 1, 2 and 3 through an orifice 42 to an inertia separator 6 where they are entrained in an air stream created by a fan 10, the air circulating through a pipe 11, and fed by an air stream issuing from a nozzle 13, through a device 18 including a contrary directed concentrically enveloping air stream from a nozzle 16 to a grooved suction wheel 30 and co-operating perforated band 29 between which a continuous rod of tobacco is formed. Suction is applied to the wheel 30 through a pipeline 37 provided with adjusting devices 38, 39 and 46 by the fan 10. Variation in the suction in the line 37 operates the devices 38, 39 to control the relative positioning of the nozzle 16 and the internal nozzle 14 through which the tobacco stream passes and also the devices 46 to control, through valve 26, the pressure in lines 22 and 23 which feed air under pressure from a source 27 to the nozzles 13 and 16 respectively. The devices 38, 39 and 46 all operate in a sense to maintain the suction in line 37 constant and hence to maintain the uniformity of the rod being formed. Surplus tobacco trimmed from the stream by the air issuing from nozzle 16 in the device 18 is fed through a line 19 to the separator or the rollers 1 and 2 depending on the position of the valve 43.
