PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain low loss splicing with good reproducibility also for optical fibers with large variation in dimensions without the need for high working skill. SOLUTION: When one end each of the optical fibers 10A, 10B are butt-spliced to each other at a splicing point 20, light from a light source 21 is made incident on the other end of the optical fiber 10A, and light which is propagated through the optical fiber 10A and leaks from the core at the splicing point 20 and is coupled to a clad or coating other than the core of the optical fiber 10B is made to leak selectively and received by a leakage light receiving part 24 arranged near one end of the optical fiber 10B; a display part 25 is made to calculate/display photo-electric power; and a butting position is adjusted so that the photo-electric power of the leakage light is minimized by applying a movement to at least one of the optical fibers 10A, 10B in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber, a movement thereto in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, and applying rotation with the longitudinal direction as an axis, and thereafter, both optical fibers are fixed.
