A honeycomb structure body (10) where honeycomb units (11) having through-holes (12) are joined together, with seal material layers (14) in between, at those outer peripheral surfaces (13) of the units that have no through-hole (12) opening. The honeycomb units (11) contain at least inorganic particles, and inorganic fibers/or whiskers. The cross-sectional area of a surface orthogonal to the through-holes (12) is in the range of 5-50 cm2. The flatness of the entire end surface where the honeycomb units (11) are joined by the seal material layers (14) and the through-holes (12) are opened is 2. 5 mm or less, and a step between end surfaces of the honeycomb units (11) is 2.0 mm or less. Thermal stress and vibration acting on the individual honeycomb units (11) can be buffered by the seal material layers (14), and in addition, breakage of the end surface can be minimized. |
