An apparatus and a method for tuning sound quality in a telematics terminal are provided to allow a user to listen to the sound quality of an optimized audio signal by compensating a frequency-classified real characteristic value by a differential value between a frequency-classified reference characteristic value for providing the sound quality of the optimized audio signal and the frequency-classified real characteristic value of a reproduced audio signal when the user selects an automatic sound quality tuning mode. A storing unit(40) stores a frequency-classified reference characteristic value of an audio signal. If an automatic sound quality tuning mode is selected, a DSP(Digital Signal Processor)(30) extracts a frequency-classified real characteristic value of a reproduced audio signal. The DSP(30) calculates a differential value between the extracted frequency-classified real characteristic value and the frequency-classified reference characteristic value stored in the storing unit(40). The DSP(30) compensates the frequency-classified real characteristic value of the reproduced audio signal by the calculated differential value.
