The device has a transmitting unit (20) for transmitting light (36) in two spectral areas to a surface (10) in a monitoring area (14) of a device to be monitored. A detector unit (40) spectrally and selectively detects a light (38) coming from the area. A microcontroller (70) connected with the detector unit and the transmitting unit controls intensity of the light (36). The microcontroller evaluates the selectively detected light and outputs switching signals to the device during qualified deviations of individual detected spectral intensities of stored reference values.
