PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping force generating valve structure of a hydraulic shock absorber having a structure capable of using a highly accurate and inexpensively formable leaf valve with a cutout part, even in a piston having an opening window part such as alternately arranging a pressure side valve seat part on the substantially same circumference to an extension side port. SOLUTION: This damping force generating valve structure of the hydraulic shock absorber has a valve seat part 21 formed on an end surface of the piston 6 and defining a pressurizing flow passage of the extension side port 6a and an annular leaf valve 5a placed in this valve seat part 21 so as to be capable of leaving and seating and having the cutout part 15 on the outer periphery, and has the opening window part 21 for alternately arranging the valve seat part 21 on the circumference to a pressure side port 6b, and is provided with positioning means 23 and 6b for positioning the cutout part 15 to be arranged on the opening window part 21 when placing this leaf valve 5a in the valve seat part 21 between the leaf valve 5a and the piston 6.
