PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display apparatus in which resistance given to a current of cooling air by outside air at an intake port is reduced and thereby degradation in dustproof performance is prevented for a part that directly causes image quality deterioration during replacement of a dustproof filter. SOLUTION: The projection type image display apparatus introduces outside air from the intake port of a housing unit and cools at least an light modulation element housed in the housing unit and used to form an optical image or an optical element interposed between the light modulation element and a light emitting means. The projection type image display apparatus is configured such that a first dust-proof filter is disposed in the intake port of the housing unit, second dust-proof filters 71R, 71G and 71B are disposed in a duct path along which the outside air having passed through the first dust-proof filter is guided to the light modulation element or optical element.
