PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method capable of producing a high-quality carbon nanofiber in good productivity. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carbon nanofiber comprises physically separating fibrils in carbon precursor fiber composed of a heat-carbonizing polymer such as acrylonitrile-based polymer by frost shattering, abrasion, etc. to obtain the carbon precursor fibril and firing the carbon precursor fibril to obtain the carbon nanofiber.
