PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protector for protecting a motor drive against damage by a simple constitution when a spindle motor or a thread motor short-circuits. SOLUTION: The protector 1 for an optical disc drive equipped with a control IC 101, a motor drive IC 102 and a motor 103 comprises a differential circuit 2 for receiving voltages 13 and 14 at both ends of the motor 103 and calculating a difference value, a comparator 3 for comparing a differential output 20 from the differential circuit 2 with a reference voltage and outputting a signal 30 for detecting the short circuit of the motor 103 by LOW, and an AND circuit 4 of the short circuit detection signal 30 and a drivable signal 12 for detecting a fault of the motor drive IC 102 by LOW. When one of the short circuit detection signal 30 and the drivable signal 12 reaches LOW, a stand-by signal 40 is brought to LOW and the control IC 101 stops a signal 11 for controlling the motor drive IC 102 by receiving this signal.
