PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine, which quickly determines the properties of a fuel immediately after cold-starting the engine. SOLUTION: When the requirements for performing cetane number estimation while idling the engine are fulfilled and an engine cooling water temperature TW is below a predetermined threshold TWTH, the target water temperature TWOBJ of the engine cooling water temperature TW is changed to a second predetermined water temperature TWOBJ2 which is lower than the normally used first predetermined water temperature TWOBJ1 (S11, S12, S14, S15). When the engine cooling water temperature TW rises near the target water temperature TWOBJ, the cetane number estimation is available (S16). By changing the target water temperature TWOBJ to a lower value, the engine cooling water temperature TW, that is, the engine temperature is quickly stabilized, and the cetane number of the fuel in use is quickly determined.
