PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chuck which safely and positively holds a case of a catalyst converter so as to prevent a deformation of the case and accommodate manufacturing allowances contained in the case. SOLUTION: According to the structure of the chuck, right and left chuck claws 10, 12 each having a contact surface extending corresponding to the shape of an external peripheral surface of the case, are held by right and left chuck claw holding members 11, 13 so as to change their positions. The chuck claw holding members 11, 13 are held by right and left chuck main bodies 2, 3 so as to change their positions, and then the right and left chuck main bodies 2, 3 are mounted on movable stands 4, 5, respectively. By changing the positions of the chuck claws 10, 12 when pressed to the external peripheral surface of the case, the manufacturing tolerances contained in the case are accommodated, and the contact surfaces of the respective chuck claws 10, 12 are brought into contact with the external peripheral surface of the case.
