An apparatus for generating steam for a washing machine is provided to prevent the apparatus for generating steam from overheating and breaking down due to the lack of water by exactly sensing a water level on a water level sensor. An apparatus(200) for generating steam for a washing machine includes a case(210), a heater(220), and a water level sensor(230). The case receives water supplied to generate the steam and forms the external appearance of the apparatus. The case has a top case(211) and a bottom case(212). The top case forms the top external appearance of the case and the bottom case forms the bottom external appearance of the case. The heater is installed inside of the case to generate the steam by heating the water saved inside of the case. The water level sensor senses whether the water level of the water supplied to an inside of the case reaches at a predetermined water level or not.
