A display device and a method for controlling the same are provided to display channels including no scramble signals in changing channels by using direction keys by skipping a channel including scramble signals automatically among channels set in a channel map. A display device has a signal input unit(10) receiving broadcasting signals. A user input unit(40) is formed to select a channel. If channel-up or channel-down is inputted from the user input unit, a controller(60) judges whether scramble signals are included in broadcasting signals corresponding to the selected channel, and skips the channel including the scramble signals. A UI(User Interface) generator(50) generates a message. The user input unit includes numeric keys for selecting a channel number. If a channel number is inputted from the user input unit through the numeric keys, the controller judges whether scramble signals are included in broadcasting signals corresponding to the selected channel and controls the UI generator to generate a message informing that the channel includes scramble signals.
