MULTILAYER POROUS FABRIC

A multilayer porous fabric comprises a porous core fabric provided with a plurality of suitably located hook means structures on at least one of its surfaces. At least one layer of nonwoven fibrous batt, pre-needled to a desired density, is attached by entanglement onto the hook means by pressing the core fabric and batt together, so that the hook structures engage with and entangle sufficient fibers from the batt to anchor the batt reliably to the core fabric without further needling. The multilayer fabric is then ready for use without further processing and can be handled before use, for example in preparation for installation in a papermaking machine press section. The porous core fabric may be formed by weaving or as an extruded sheet. Compressive loads applied to the porous fabric may enhance the level of entanglement of the batt onto the hook means.
