PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser welding method for a battery using a square outer package can as well as a square sealed battery with excellent welding strength and capable of avoiding thermal damage on a gasket. SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method of a square sealed battery equipped a square outer package can 1 with an opening, a sealing plate 2 fitted into the opening, a current extracting terminal retained by a through-hole fitted to the sealing plate 2 through a resin gasket, with a fit-in part of the outer package can 1 with the sealing plate 2 laser-welded, the laser welding comprises a preliminary welding process in which the fit-in part is preliminarily welded by applying spot irradiation on each long side of the sealing plate 2 directly opposed to the current-extracting terminal with the latter as a center, and a proper welding process of laser-welding all the fit-in part after the preliminary welding.
