Process for connecting/disconnecting at least one cylinder (5) of an internal combustion engine (1) comprises increasing the filling of the operating cylinders with air or an air/fuel mixture during connection/disconnection and simultaneously displacing the advance angle of the operating cylinders to a later time point to create a moment reserve. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine for carrying out the above process. Preferred Features: During connection/disconnection a difference between the nominal moment and the total moment of the engine is adjusted by altering the advance angle of the operating cylinders.
