PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chuck that is capable of exerting a high clamping force, does not damage a tool shank, and dispenses with a high clamping force applied from an operator. SOLUTION: A central member of the chuck having an axis 3 supports a plurality of jaws 7 movable between a clamping position and a release position of a clamp in the tool. Each jaw has a seat section 20 opened toward the axis, the seat section has a rear surface 23 and both sides 24, 25. A roller 29 is fitted into the rear surface, is rotatable with the axis parallel with the axis as a center, and is movable laterally between both sides. The rear surface is flat and V-shaped. If an operator clamps the jaw against the tool, the roller per se is positioned at a center of the rear surface. If the chuck is rotated to the right hand (R), the roller is rotated without being slid with the jaw and tool until it is contacted with one side 24 of the seat section.
