PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent pulse waves from becoming dull by enabling high-speed superposition of pulses on a lamp current while maintaining power at a constant level, in a discharge lamp lighting device. SOLUTION: An arithmetic processing unit 28 superimposes a pulse current over a lamp current in a prescribed cycle, and controls a power control circuit 20 so as to fix power supplied to a discharge lamp 2. Therefore, the arithmetic processing unit 28 reduces the direct current level I<SB>1</SB>of the lamp current and controls the power control circuit so that the integrated power consumption in the cycle T<SB>1</SB>of the pulse current becomes prescribed integrated power consumption, when superposing a pulse current▵I on the lamp current by adding it.
