PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler eliminating wasteful resonator volume by having an effect of varying a resonator attenuation frequency from a low frequency range to an intermediate frequency range and capable of exerting an efficient muffling effect at a low cost. SOLUTION: The muffler 1 has a cylindrical muffler shell 2, an inlet pipe 3 for introducing exhaust gas into the muffler shell 2 and an outlet pipe 4 for reducing sound of the exhaust gas in the muffler shell 2 and exhausting it to an outside, wherein the inlet pipe 3 is inserted inside the muffler shell 2 through an end plate 5 at a front end of the muffler shell 2, and the outlet pipe 4 is led outside through an end plate 6 at a rear end. A resonator pipe 12 penetrates a baffle 8, which divides an internal space of the muffler shell 2 into an expansion chamber 10 and a resonator chamber 11, and projects its tip portion into the resonator chamber 11. Small holes 14 are equally formed in the resonator pipe 12 over its entire length so that their opening rate to a total surface area is 1% to 7%. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
