摘要 Polyesterimides which are soluble in organic solvents are prepared by interacting an organic diisocyanate at 50-250 DEG C. with a compound of formula <FORM:1045395/C3/1> in which R is a saturated or unsaturated radical containing aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carbon atoms linked directly to the ester groups optionally including an aromatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic ring or an ether, ester, sulphide, sulphoxide or sulphone link and chlorine, bromine, iodine, nitro, alkoxy or mercapto substituents. R groups specified include ethylene. The diisocyanate may be aliphatic, aromatic, cycloaliphatic, alkaromatic and mixed cycloaliphatic / aromatic and may contain alkoxy, azo, nitro, cyano, ester or sulphone groups. Diisocyanates specified include tolylene diisocyanate, diisocyanato - diphenyl ether and diisocyanato-diphenyl-methane. These may be masked by one of a number of specified masking agents. The reaction may be effected by adding the ester to the diisocyanate or vice versa, 0.9-1.1 moles of the latter being used per mole of the former. The reaction may be carried out under anhydrous conditions in an organic solvent and under an inert atmosphere, e.g. N2 or argon. 0.1-10% of a Lewis acid or basic catalyst may be present. Solvents specified include cresol and xylene. Catalysts specified include tin octoate and titanium butylate. CO2 is evolved during the reaction. The product may be mixed with polyethylene terephthalate and used as a lacquer for copper wire or to make films. In examples (1, 3 and 4) the mixture of polyesterimide and polyethylene terephthalate is treated with further catalyst and heated.
