PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tripod type constant velocity universal joint capable of preventing damage starting from a cured part even when a using condition becomes severe accompanying compactness and reduced thickness by making the residual stress of the outer peripheral surface abutting on the back side of a roller effective contact range of a track groove appropriate and enhancing and strengthening the hardness on the backside of the roller effective contact range in an outer side joint member. SOLUTION: The tripod type constant velocity universal joint is equipped with the outside joint member 1 composed of steel including the track groove 6 having a roller guide face 7 facing the circumferential direction. The compression residual stress in the circumferential direction of the outer peripheral surface abutting on the back side in the roller effective contact range of the track groove 6 of the outside joint member 1 is set to 200 MPa or more, and the hardness is set to HV 300 or more.
