A dishwasher and a method of controlling the same are provided to vary strength of washing water injected to dishes from upper and lower injection arms so as to effectively wash the dishes. A dishwasher includes a washing chamber. An upper rack(21) and a lower rack(22) are installed in the washing chamber to accommodate the dishes in the washing chamber. Each rack accommodates dishes having similar strengths so that the dishes can be effectively washed. Otherwise, each rack accommodates dishes having similar contamination so that washing of the dishes can be effectively performed. The dishes having severe contamination and high strength are disposed on the upper rack, and the dishes having low contamination and weakness such as glass dishes are disposed on the lower rack. The method of controlling the dishwasher comprises a selection step of selecting various dish washing functions while power is supplied; a control step of setting a strength of washing water injected from an upper injection arm and a lower injection arm differently; and a performance step of washing dishes.
