A valve system for a reciprocating compressor is provided to reduce manufacturing costs of a compressor, to prevent damage of an intake valve, and to improve compression efficiency by allowing refrigerant to be directly supplied into compression space through intake space of a valve cover and a refrigerant flow path groove of an upper end surface of a cylinder. A valve system for a reciprocating compressor comprises a cylinder(141), a valve cover(150), an intake valve(143) and a discharge valve(160). The cylinder forms compression space for allowing a piston(130) to be reciprocated, and a refrigerant flow path groove(142) on an upper end surface so as to be communicated with the compression space. The valve cover forms intake space so as to be communicated with the refrigerant flow path groove, discharge space so as to be communicated with the compression space of the cylinder, and combined with an upper end side of the cylinder. The intake valve is installed between the intake space(151) of the valve cover and the refrigerant flow path groove of the cylinder, and controls suction of the refrigerant. The discharge valve is installed between the compression space of the cylinder and the discharge space(152) of the valve cover, and controls discharge of the refrigerant.
