In the production of a (preferably multilayered) fibrous sheet with a finished side and a reverse side, by dewatering the sheet at least partially by displacement dewatering with a displacing gas, the displacing gas flow direction (S), at least in a region in which materials in the sheet (e.g. fillers, fines, contaminants and dyes) still have predetermined mobility, is from the finished side towards the reverse side. An independent claim is included for a corresponding sheet production machine, having a displacement dewatering zone (12) in which the displacing gas flow direction (S) is as above.
