PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform focusing detection to a main subject with high accuracy. SOLUTION: In a focusing detector which performs focusing detection by using light beams passed through a photographing optical system, when focusing detection is performed by computing an evaluation value to each luminance signal in imaging of a plurality of times, a searching area which becomes the object of the focusing detection is set on the basis of additional information obtained on the basis of the luminance signal, and the evaluation value in the searching area is calculated from the luminance signal in the searching area at the imaging of a plurality of times and thereby the evaluation value in the searching area is obtained in the imaging of a plurality of times. A focusing position is presumed by using the evaluation value in the searching area obtained in the imaging of a plurality of times, and focusing presumption is performed to the searching area limited to a noticed subject.
