1,207,917. Electromagnetic forming. GULF GENERAL ATOMIC Inc. 25 June, 1968 [27 June, 1967], No. 30119/68. Heading B3Q. An electromagnetic forming apparatus comprises a coil 11 for producing the magnetic field, field shaping means 13, 15 defining a plurality of work-receiving apertures 17, 19, means for placing at least one of the apertures in an operative condition, and means 23 for energizing the coil for forming work in the operative aperture or apertures. The beryllium copper, steel, &c. field shapers 13, 15 are located one at each end of the coil-core 25 by insulating blocks 37, 39. A casing 41 has rails 30, 31, 33, 35 for guiding the parts of the shapers when they are closed about a workpiece selectively, by pneumatic actuators (21), Fig. 1 (not shown). Insulation (29) on at least one side of an aperture, prevents contact between the parts of a shaper, and only one part of each shaper may be movable. The apparatus may be used for contracting clamping rings (49, 51), Fig. 3 (not shown), simultaneously or singly about the rubber boot (47) covering a flexible joint. Two or more coils 11 may be used, acting as a single coil. In another form, Fig. 4, two shapers 13a, 15a occupy the same plane, the parts of shaper 15a being separated along one axis of movement to allow closure of the parts of the other shaper along a perpendicular axis. Two coils (53, 55), Fig. 5 (not shown), are used, connected in series or parallel with the pulse source, and the apertures 21, 23 may be of different sizes. The embodiment of Fig. 2 may be modified to include a pair of field shapers at each end, of the type shown in Fig. 4. In a further form, Fig. 6, a frame 91, in which the split shaper 79 is closed on rails 87 by pneumatic actuators 21b, is moved by an actuator. 96 to align a selected aperture 81, 83, 85 with the coil mounted in a frame 65b. In a final form, Fig. 8, oval coils 53c (55c) surround both apertures 100, 101, and the aperture not in use is filled with a conducting plug (107), Fig. 10 (not shown). |
