PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of preventing a writing error caused by the unsuitability of a heating part and heating timing by applying near-field light to a prescribed position and range to heat them and immediately performing writing in heat-assisted magnetic recording. SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head is provided with: a substrate having a medium facing surface and an element forming surface vertical to the medium facing surface; an electromagnetic coil element having a magnetic pole end reaching a head end surface on the side of the medium facing surface; and a near-field light generating part for heating a magnetic recording medium, having generation end reaching the head end surface on the side of the medium facing surface and generating near-field light, wherein the generation end is close to the magnetic pole end and positioned on the leading side of the magnetic pole end, and the shape of the generation end in the head end surface on the side of the medium facing surface is a regular trapezoid having a shorter side on the trailing side or a triangle having one apex angle on the trailing side and having the base on the leading side.
