PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which has a simple structure, can be repetitively operated at a high speed and can efficiently produce a synthesis gas. SOLUTION: The apparatus has a reaction chamber 5 housing a raw material, steam and combustion-supporting gas, a raw material feeder 6 which feeds the raw material to the reaction chamber, a steam feeder 7 which feeds steam to the reaction chamber, a combustion-supporting gas feeder 8 which feeds the combustion-supporting gas to the reaction chamber, valve gears 6A, 7A and 8A intermittently communicating the steam feeder and the combustion-supporting gas feeder to the reaction chamber, a discharge equipment 10 which discharges the synthesis gas produced through a reaction between steam and carbon or hydrocarbon in the raw material in the reaction chamber from the reaction chamber and compressing systems 3 and 4 which perform adiabatic compression of a mixture of steam and the combustion-supporting gas in the reaction chamber by using a member narrowing the volume of the reaction chamber. Steam and the combustion-supporting gas are subjected to adiabatic compression to achieve high temperatures and reacted with the carbon or hydrocarbon in the raw material fed to the reaction chamber.
