The invention relates to a crankcase breathing system (1) for an internal combustion engine. Said breathing system (1) comprises at least one oil separating device encompassing a preliminary separator (3) and a main separator (4) which is mounted downstream thereof. The preliminary separator (3) is provided with a diffuser (11) which is located between an inlet (7) and an outlet (8) and expands in the direction of flow (P). In order to allow for high separation rates in the most simple manner possible, the preliminary separator (3) is embodied monolithically along with the main separator (4), the preliminary separator (3) and the main separator (4) preferably forming a separator unit (2).
