<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigmentation inhibitor improving and/or preventing pigmentation of the skin and a composition having aspect of industrially effectively utilizing the inhibitor. <P>SOLUTION: The pigmentation inhibitor comprises thioctic acids and/or chitin hydrolyzate as an active ingredient. The thioctic acids are preferably thioctic acid, a thioctic acid derivative, a lipid coated material thereof or double coated material obtained by further coating the lipid coated material with a hydrophilic substance, and chitin hydrolyzate is preferably an N-acetyl-D-glucosamine or an N-acetylchitooligosaccharide.
