PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk device which learns more appropriate floating height and changes a head floating height by using an error occurrence under an actual usage environment, thereby having improved reliability. SOLUTION: When an error occurs, first, the floating height of a head 6 is increased to perform a retry operation. When return is made from the error by increasing the floating height of the head 6, a predetermined value of the floating height is changed so as to make the floating height of the head 6 in each environment appropriate. When the predetermined value of the floating height of the head 6 is appropriately changed, a retry routine is finished. When return can not be made from the error even if the floating height of the head 6 is increased, the floating height is decreased to perform a retry operation again. Since there is such a risk that the head 6 comes in contact with a medium when the floating height is too decreased, the retry operation is finished without changing the predetermined value of the floating height after the retry.
