<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating and diagnosing cancer by utilizing a differentiation antigen called mesothelin related with mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. <P>SOLUTION: This method for inhibiting the proliferation of tumor cells is provided by using an antibody binding specifically with the differentiation antigen mesothelin and having approximately 69 kD molecular weight, and a complex of the antibody with an effector molecule such as a toxin, etc., for targeting the tumor cells carrying the mesothelin.
