Disclosed is 7-hydroxy-9-methylpentadecane which, since it is a branched dimerized alcohol of a secondary alcohol and has a low viscosity, can be used as a starting material for the production of an ether or ester which is used in a product such as a surfactant, a lubricant, a plasticizer and a cosmetic to improve the handling property and productivity in the process for production of the product or in the process for production of an application product in which the product is used, and which is therefore excellent in usefulness. 7-Hydroxy-9-methylpentadecane having a structure of the chemical formula: CH<SUB>3</SUB>(CH<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>5</SUB>CH(OH)CH<SUB>2</SUB>CH(CH<SUB>3</SUB>)(CH<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>5</SUB>CH<SUB>3</SUB> (1).
