u The first charge air cooler has sufficient capacity for the coolant temperature to be kept within a desired range during any engine operating conditions, when it is used to cool the engine. u The first charge air cooler is located in the air inlet line for the engine, in a position downstream from a compressor in this line. This cooler is used to cool the air in a first step using a circulating coolant which is also used in the engine cooling system. A second charge air cooler in the air inlet line is used to cool the air in a second step using a second cooling system and a valve device. In a first position, the valve allows the flow of a second coolant through the second cooler and in a second position it prevents this flow of coolant through this cooler.
