[Also in Division D1] A spinneret plate for melt-spinning filaments having a 5-, 7- or 9-lobular cross-section, comprises a solid plate having a melt face and an extrusion face, a bounding wall defining a passageway for molten polymer between said faces and forming at said extrusion face a multibranched slot, the branches of which are inclined together in one direction (see Figs. 16a; 16b, 17 and 18). The novel filaments produced in this apparatus have an axial symmetry corresponding to the number of lobes, but have no radial or planar symmetry (these terms are defined). The extrusion slots may be arcuate, preferably circular, or may be radially inclined for a portion of their length, with the distal ends set at an angle thereto. The arcuate, slots may subtend an angle of 130-200 degrees; the angled slots may be angled at 20-80 degrees (offset angle) with the bend occurring after 30-65% of the length travel in the radial direction. |
