1,274,020. Fluid dampers; bearings. SOC. ANON. D.B.A. 14 July, 1969 [5 Aug., 1968], No. 35363/69. Headings F2A and F2S. [Also in Division G1] Oscillations of a shaft 3 are damped by a film of fluid in the capillary gap 4 between the shaft and a continuous or discontinuous ring 1 of porous material (e.g. metal or nylon) fixed to a housing 2. The gap is required to be smaller at its centre than at its ends (e.g. stepped, as shown, or biconical). The ring 1 constitutes a fluid reservoir, supplying fluid (e.g. oil or silicone) to the damping film when the temperature increases, and absorbing it when temperature decreases, thus compensating for the change in viscosity with temperature and maintaining constant with temperature the viscous torque exerted on the shaft. Alternatively, the reservoir ring may be fixed to the shaft, and there may be two facing rings. |
